It is something that a lot of parents ask; can my child scuba dive? Well, yes they can! But, its not a simple yes…. when it comes to children and diving, it’s important to remember one key thing: not all kids are alike. Children grow, mature, and develop confidence at their own pace. While some might be ready to explore the underwater world as soon as they meet the minimum age requirements, others may need more time — and that’s perfectly okay. Diving is fun, but also challenging and comes with risks and real dangers – it is very important that children who take part in diving are mature enough to understand these risks so they can have fun, safely.

Let them lead the way
It’s natural for diving parents to want to share their love of the ocean with their children, but diving should always be something a child wants to do — not something they feel pressured into. Genuine curiosity and excitement are what make for safe, confident, and happy young divers. When children are ready and eager, they tend to absorb new skills faster and have far more fun in the process.
Before enrolling your child in any diving program, have an open conversation about what scuba diving is really like — the equipment, the breathing, and the environment. Gauge their enthusiasm, and if they’re not ready yet, that’s fine! Courses have a lot of theory, and you need some physical strength, which not all kids will be ready for.
Equipment
There is nothing worse that ill-fitting equipment; this will not only lessen enjoyment but also potentially, hinder the development of their skills. If your child is to take a diving course, it is very important to make sure the dive centre provides equipment suitable for children and that it is properly fitted. Importantly, the wetsuit needs to fit perfectly; children get colder quicker and a wetsuit that is too large will not only rub and chafe, but will also rapidly lose all their body heat. If they are very small, you may also consider the option of a smaller tank.
PADI Dive programs for kids
PADI offers several fun, age-appropriate options to introduce children to diving safely and progressively. Each step is designed to match their physical and emotional development while ensuring the focus stays on fun, safety, and learning.

1. PADI Bubblemaker (Ages 8+)
Minimum Age: 8 years
Maximum Depth: 2 metres in a pool only
This is the perfect first experience for kids who want to try scuba. All done in a safe, shallow pool environment. Under close supervision, children get to wear all the equipment and breathe underwater, play underwater games, and experience what it feels like to be weightless! There are no skills just fun, practice and blowing bubbles!
2. PADI Seal Team (Ages 8+)
Minimum Age: 8 years
Maximum Depth: 4 metres in a pool only
A structured program for young adventurers who want more than a single experience. Kids complete 5 “Aqua Missions” each teaching them basic diving skills and introduce fun underwater challenges. It’s essentially an Open Water course but all done in the pool.
3. PADI Master Seal Team (Ages 8+)
Minimum Age: 8 years
Maximum Depth: 4 meters in a pool only
For those who have completed all 5 Aqua Missions; they can then do 10 Specialty Aqua Missions. This introduces them to different challenges like navigation, creature ID, photography and even night diving – all done in the pool!
4. PADI Junior Open Water Diver (Ages 10–14)
Minimum Age: 10 years
Maximum Depth:
Ages 10–11: up to 12 metres
Ages 12–14: up to 18 metres
Once your child turns 10 years old, they can enroll in the full PADI Open Water Course, adapted for younger divers by decreasing the maximum depth of the training dives. It combines theory, pool sessions, and open water dives, giving kids the skills and knowledge to dive safely with a certified adult. Once a Junior Open Water Diver turns 15, their certification automatically upgrades to a full PADI Open Water Diver.

Can kids scuba dive? Yes they can! Every child’s diving journey is unique — and that’s exactly how it should be. The best divers (of any age!) are the ones who dive because they love it. When kids are given the time, encouragement, and freedom to grow into the sport at their own pace, diving becomes something truly special: a lifelong connection to the ocean and all its wonders.
