Updated: Apr 7, 2023

While close to each other (a boat transfer between the two islands takes about 10 minutes), Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are a bit different!

Both islands offer stunning natural beauty, with crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, and rugged coastline. But which island is the better choice for a vacation?

Staying in Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is known for its beautiful beaches, such as Mushroom Beach and Dream Beach, as well as its clear waters.

Nusa Lembongan is a great choice for those who want to experience the laid-back, relaxed atmosphere of a small island. Compared to Nusa Penida, it offers more options for food or activities such as yoga. It is also home to some great surf breaks for those who surf or want to give it a try!

For those who enjoy walking, it is a good option as the main village of Jugungbatu can easily be covered by foot.

Staying in Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a larger island located a short boat ride from Nusa Lembongan. It is known for its rugged coastline and stunning natural beauty, with cliffs, caves, and hidden beaches waiting to be explored. The island is also home to a number of temples and other cultural attractions, such as the Goa Giri Putri Temple and the Banah Cliff viewpoint.

One of the main advantages of staying in Nusa Penida is the opportunity to experience a more authentic, traditional way of life. The island is less developed than Nusa Lembongan, and has a smaller population, which means that you'll be able to escape the crowds and enjoy a more peaceful, quiet vacation. Additionally, Nusa Penida is a great choice for adventure seekers, as there are plenty of opportunities for hiking, biking, and exploring the island's many natural wonders.

Nusa Penida is also much bigger than Nusa Lembongan, so you might want to allow more time if you are going to explore both islands!

So, is it better to stay in Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida?

The answer really depends on your personal preferences and travel style. If you want to enjoy the convenience of a more developed island, Nusa Lembongan may be the better choice. However, if you're looking for a more authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience, Nusa Penida could be the perfect destination. Either way, both islands offer plenty of beauty and adventure, and are sure to provide an unforgettable vacation experience.
