How to become a PADI Instructor?

Becoming a scuba instructor is not only an exciting career choice, but it also allows you to positively impact the lives of those you teach. However, before diving into the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), it's essential to understand that becoming a certified PADI instructor requires a significant commitment to training. Let's go over the prerequisites and expectations for becoming a PADI instructor, so you know what to expect before you begin!

Prerequisites to the PADI Instructor course

Before enrolling in the PADI IDC, there are certain requirements that you must meet:

  • Already be a certified PADI Assistant Instructor or Divemaster.

  • Alternatively, be an instructor registered with a different training organisation with a good standing for at least 6 months.

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months.

  • Have 100 logged dives.

  • Show training in first aid and CPR within the past 24 months. The Emergency First Response course satisfies this requirement.

  • Be physically fit for diving, as evidenced by a medical statement from a doctor signed within the year.

Ready to teach diving?

The PADI IDC is a two-week intensive course that includes learning, studying, and development, as well as some fun of course! During the course, you will learn how to apply the PADI education system through a number of presentations. You'll be expected to present at least 2 teaching presentations in confined water, 2 knowledge development presentations, and 1 open water teaching presentation that integrates the two skills.

During our IDC here at Purple Dive, we go way beyond the basic requirements, to give you plenty of time to practice and feel comfortable with all of these.

We also cover in classroom sessions a lot of information on PADI standards, how to organise your dive courses, and other knowledge you will need as a PADI Instructor.

Here is a little preview below of one of our instructor courses. Are you ready to take the next step? Get in touch!
