II. The most famous Nusa Penida temple: Pura Penataran Ped in the village of Ped
Also known as Pura Dalem Ped Temple is a significant religious site in Nusa Penida and is said to have a dark history. The story goes that it was made as a place to worship the island’s protectors, the wong samar (holy people unseen by the human eye). 500 of these wong samar were once controlled by an evil ruler, Ratu Gede Nusa also known as I Macaling. The ruler had been exiled from the Kingdom of Klungkung for opposing its rulers and was angry. Using his black magic, given to him by the Leyaks (witches and dark spirits), he sent disease, floods and hardship to Bali as revenge. After a harrowing battle, the priests and barong from Bali managed to defeat him and trapped his spirit in Pura Ped. All Balinese people are supposed to go on pilgrimage to this temple to recognize their part of darkness and base instincts ( think the yin and the yang) and work to overcome them. Some say that people also come here to ask for the power of black magic or for healing.
